March’s Creative Morning (thrown by @Swissmiss) was inspiring to say the least. The stunning Galapagos Art Space, coffee, and various baked treats from Almondine may have helped a little as well ;)
The speaker Ji Lee (you can see his work here) spoke about the importance of personal projects and how they can not only enhance professional work but help your carreer overall.
He used the example of his Bubble project and how that helped him create buzz around the opening of the New Museum here in New York.
Bubble Project
From the website:
“50,000 bubble stickers have been printed. They have been continually placed on top of ads on the streets of New York. They are left blank, inviting passersby to fill them in. I photograph and archive the results. This project instantly transforms the intrusive and dull corporate monologues into a public dialogue. Our public spaces are returned back to the public. Since its launch in 2002, the Bubble Project has become a global project. Bubblers all around the globe are bubbling their own towns.”
New Museum :
The 5 things.
The biggest take away from the talk were the 5 tenants around personal work that Ji lee has come up with over his years of pursuing personal projects.
1. It’s all about having fun, when it’s fun I’ll always find time for it.
2. Personal and professional projects compliment each other.
3. Never put all of my eggs in one basket
4. Ideas are nothing, doing is everything
5 Ship! Ship! Ship!
We all left feeling energized and determined to turn all of the great ideas that we pitch to each other constantly into living breathing projects. We hope to see you at the next Creative morning!
Great quick recap of Ji Lee’s CreativeMornings/NYC earlier this year.
