“Being an artist, you don’t really wait for people to tell you to do something, you just do it, and do or die, you just find means to get it done.”

Laurie Frick is a data artist, who uses self-tracking data to construct hand-built works and installations that depict a time in the future where sensors will track and predict our behavior to help us better understand ourselves. She spoke at CreativeMornings/Austin on the hidden parts of ourselves, those only revealed through date. Watch her talk. →

How are you making a difference?

Artist Vanessa German heard gunfire in her Pittsburgh neighborhood, and decided that she couldn’t sit by and let children keep dying. Founding “Love Front Porch” and Homewood’s Art House, she is also the woman behind the “STOP SHOOTING, WE LOVE YOU” yard signs.

Her talk at Pittsburgh’s CreativeMornings is a powerful one, speaking on bravery. “Everything I learned about bravery, I learned through love.”

Austin Kleon was the first speaker to grace the stage at our Austin, TX chapter, speaking on the future for our April theme month on the topic.

Austin has raised the eyebrows of the creative community with his books Steal Like an Artist and Newspaper Blackout. He has drawn rapt audiences at TEDx, Pixar, Google, and SXSW (to name a few). And he was declared by The Atlantic to be “one of the positvely most interesting people on the Internet.”

And, of course, his name is Austin.

What makes you happy?

This month marks the first global theme for CreativeMornings, where all 42 chapters will be talking about “Happiness.”

We want to know, what makes YOU happy? Photo reply to this post with a photo of something around you—could be your studio space, a friend, the weather—anything that is a source of happiness for you!

Our speaker at the October 2012 CreativeMornings/NewYork was Maira Kalman, an award-winning artist, illustrator, and product designer. She has illustrated numerous covers for The New Yorker magazine and has written and illustrated more than a dozen children’s books. Her articles and illustrations have appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, Interview, and many other publications.

The event was generously hosted by the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan.

A big thank you to Ben Hallman for filming and editing, Katherine Miles Jones for photography

We at CreativeMornings HQ are envious of this Friday’s CreativeMornings/Vancouver attendees who get to see Jeff Hamada in action.

Jeff is a Japanese Canadian artist living and working in Vancouver. In 2008, he created Booooooom.com which has become one of the largest art blogs on the Internet. He has created things for Native Shoes, Converse, Oakley, Endeavor Snowboards, Electronic Arts, and Livestock.
