Talented designer and illustrator Beci Orpin speaks at the very first CreativeMornings/Melbourne event for 2013. Talking about what happiness is for her, Beci titled her talk: “Happiness is…” From bikes to cats with some tips and advice along the way, Beci delivers an excellent talk on the meaning of happiness for her and how you can find some, too.

Beci is a designer-illustrator based in Melbourne, Australia. She has been working freelance for over 10 years and her clients include Universal Music, Visa, Fosters and Mercedes Benz. In addition to freelance work, Beci also exhibits her work frequently and runs children’s clothing label Tiny Mammoth. When she is not working, Beci likes riding her bike, gardening and hanging out with her two sons, Tyke and Ari, and partner Raph.

My sketchbook.
Beci has to force herself to work in her sketchbook, but it creates a rewarding process and leads to some of her best work.
Making mistakes.
If you’re not making mistakes, you’re probably not trying hard enough or pushing yourself hard enough.
Riding my bike.
When you have a challenging problem, sometimes you just need to take a step back and change your pace—go for a walk or ride your bike, just get out of studio. It will make you feel 100x better.
Ignoring the rules.
A willingness to break the rules can lead to different opportunities, and set you apart from the rest of the pack.
Having my cats around.
Become who doesn’t love being surrounded by cats?
Diversity.
Doing different things allows you to move into different fields and make a variety of work. It also keeps you from getting bored.
Community.
Find your creative community and people than you can watch and learn from, as well as be inspired by.
Running your own race.
It’s really easy to compare yourself to your peers. Being jaded is a big waste of energy. Stop worrying about what other people are doing, and focus on making sure that you’re doing a really good job at what you’re doing.

Watch the talk.

Artist, illustrator, designer, mother, cat lover, colour enthusiast and everyone’s favourite creative heroine, Beci Orpin, spoke to a sold-out CreativeMornings/Melbourne crowd this January. “Happiness is…community, running your own race and ignoring the rules,” she said. Really, really, excellent photos by Mark Lobo.
