We are infatuated with these hand-crafted frames made from reclaimed Douglas Fir out of Detroit. In particular, the detailing of the rough-sawn edge adds a lovely touch. The frames are born out of a partnership with Urban Ashes, an organization purposefully deconstructing abandoned homes in Detroit. In using a transitional labor force, these valuable and rare materials are diverted from the landfill to create beautiful one-of-a-kind frames.

Co-founder Fabian Pfortmüller was one of the first speakers at our Zürich chapter, where he spoke about design with a conscience. Watch his talk.

MAKE ENEMIES & GAIN FANS

We’re big BIG fans of Fredrik Öst & Magnus Berg, the gentlemen behind Snask, a branding, design and film agency based in the heart of Stockholm.

Ever since they spoke at our Stockholm event last year, they stole our ♥s forever and went down in CreativeMornings history as one of the best talks of all time. (Kicking off your talk with a man in a bunny suit and rap music is a surefire way to do that.)

The duo epitomizes a new breed in the design world. From internet blogs to crazy antics, their approach is anything but routine. In their book, Make Enemies & Gain Fans they share their secrets to success—some of which include learning how to pee on yourself, telling pink lies, and finding out why making enemies is a good thing.

CreativeMornings ♥’s MailChimp

MailChimp has been a big part of CreativeMornings for years. From covering breakfast at the earliest NYC events and presenting our global month on “Happiness” to helping start our Atlanta chapter and pointing out that you can rearrange the letters in “Debbie Millman” to spell “Denim Millbabe,” MailChimp has been an irreplaceable ally for CM.

Since 2009, we’ve had the pleasure of growing alongside MailChimp and getting to know their founder, Ben Chestnut, who gave one of our favorite talks last year. When we asked them about coming onboard as an Official Partner, we shouldn’t have been surprised by their continuing generosity.

Apart from providing a great product (to design and send email newsletters), they embody a wonderful brand, have an adventurous mascot, and seem to continually find ways to delight their community. Their support will help us launch new cities, equip hosts with shiny tools, and grow our small, passionate team at HQ.

We’re honored to formally announce MailChimp as our newly minted Official Partner for Communication!

To celebrate, enjoy an animated gif of Freddie making it rain donuts. (Thanks, Kate!)

Happy First Birthday, Prague!

Some words from the team:

Oh, look at us, one full year of Creative Mornings in Prague. We are grateful to our speakers, to everyone who helped us with venues, equipment, refreshments or good ideas. This time it was the sweet teamwork with Chefparade.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, the success is also yours. And for the future and for all of our fans – see you soon, every month, in the morning, anywhere, anytime, see you creatively stroll!”

We love this video made by Sense Appeal, the catering crew of our Toronto Chapter, speaking about how they theme the food served at their local events.

The New CreativeMornings.com

It’s been a little over a year since our Kickstarter when we were humbled by the response from our 1200 backers. Today, we’re launching our new site.

We couldn’t have done it without you, our community, and are now excited to share with you this new home for the CreativeMornings world. Now at nearly sixty chapters featuring speakers from Milton Glaser and Seth Godin to Jessica Hische and Erik Spiekermann, we never could have imagined what CreativeMornings has become.

Built by Brooklyn-based Oak Studios and—in true CM spirit—translated by chapter organizers, the new website features:

  • A full, searchable, sortable archive of every CreativeMornings talk
  • Dedicated chapter sections to stay up to date with your local event
  • The ability to live tag quotes from a video, post comments, save talks to watch later and ♥ favorite videos
  • A “People” section filled with attendee profiles from around the world Translated versions of the site in ten languages!

At April’s CreativeMornings/Atlanta, Perry Fair, Chief Creative Officer at JWT gives us a call to action. Titled, “How the Refrigerator Killed the Caveman,” Perry’s talk digs in to how advances in technology are stunting our creative process, as we move toward a “culture of curation.”

Austin Kleon rings in the first CreativeMornings/Austin event on a good note, setting the bar high for future talks at the Texas chapter.

Austin wants us to stop fetishizing creativity. Stop using ‘creative’ as a noun. And stop treating the creative process as some sort of magical mystery that always ends in beautiful work.

Instead, he wants us to not just show the product of those creative efforts, but show our process. Austin walks us through some of his messier moments, the 'shadow galleries’ of being an artist and a father. He calls for authenticity, but not just in the trite way it has become to be known—but as artists and designers sharing their work with other people.

“Fair use will not save you.”

Cut, copy, paste. The ability to reuse and remix is so deeply baked into our tools, it’s rewritten our culture. We learn to make great art by copying, and we participate in our culture by reusing and modifying what we see. But the law hasn’t caught up with our changing values, effectively criminalizing the creativity of millions. Cover songs on YouTube, fanfic, mashups, and supercuts all violate copyright, and lawyers are starting to find new tools to discover and enforce infringement. Welcome to the new Prohibition.
