reuse
The talk from the very first CreativeMornings/Munich has just gone up, where Conrad Caine, child prodigy, entrepreneur, managing director, founder and owner of CONRAD CAINE GmbH, speaks on the meaning of reuse in design.
“We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas.”
—Steve Jobs, Apple
Conrad walks us through a few successful brands that borrow from existing strategies or ideas to create a brand new outcome.
“Fair use will not save you.”
—Andy Baio
Cut, copy, paste. The ability to reuse and remix is so deeply baked into our tools, it’s rewritten our culture. We learn to make great art by copying, and we participate in our culture by reusing and modifying what we see. But the law hasn’t caught up with our changing values, effectively criminalizing the creativity of millions. Cover songs on YouTube, fanfic, mashups, and supercuts all violate copyright, and lawyers are starting to find new tools to discover and enforce infringement. Welcome to the new Prohibition.

We love the make your own re-usable nametag station that took root at this March’s CreativeMornings/Pittsburgh, perfectly in tune with our global theme of “Reuse.” The speaker at the event was Ian Rosenberger. Photos by Rob de la Cretaz.

The speaker at tomorrow’s CreativeMornings/LosAngeles is Canadian born artist and designer Stephen Kenn.
Stephen’s current collections include a furniture line (The Inheritance Collection, pictured above) and a new bag collection (The Encounter collection).
“Composed of steel welded frames with a marbled brown finish, custom webbing belts, smooth leather straps and repurposed WWII military fabric. The design is simple, comfortable, and conducive to conversation.”
They’re asking every attendee to bring atleast one used clothing item (socks, shoes, shirts, slacks, etc) to donate to the mission and be entered to win a fabulous (and gently used) bike from the Beltline Bike Shop provided by Matchstic!
Other chapters have chimed in, too, from reusable nametag stations in Pittsburgh to bringing your own coffee mug. Look out for some reuse awesomeness at a CreativeMornings chapter near you!
What’s your favorite reuse project?
Share either an image or description of your favorite project—either yours or someone else's—that repurposes what would otherwise be waste to give it a new life!
Trash Footwear is a brand that aims to inform people of the massive potential of ‘waste’ materials that would ordinarily end up in landfill; in the process questioning why we create something called ‘waste’ in the first place!
Their range of footwear is made largely from locally sourced on-going waste streams, and it is through the collection of these materials that we have begun to see the many others ways in which we can transform this so-called ‘rubbish’ into *rather fancy* yet functional items! Resources are running low in this world, but rubbish isn’t!
These might look like beings from another planent, but they’re actually assembled from bits of trash by Bogotá artist Julio Rodriguez.
Julio will be the speaker at this month’s CreativeMornings/Bogotá on March 15. Find out more about the event here.
Vivian Manasc is Senior Principal of Manasc Isaac and a Canadian leader in sustainable design.
Next Friday, she will be joining the folks at CreativeMornings/Edmonton to talk about her experience designing outstanding sustainable buildings for public and corporate sector owners, facilitating an integrated sustainable design process.
Above are a few architectural drawings from Manasc Isaac.
Lyle is the author of several books, and many blog entries and articles on renewable energy, local economy, adaptation and sustainability. He is a reluctant activist who now finds himself entrenched in what he calls, ‘the renewable energy establishment.’
February we celebrated and deconstructed “Money” across the globe. Now March is upon us, and we’re happy to announce our next theme: “Reuse.” Our LA chapter host Jon Setzen selected the theme and recommended us to the wonderful Roxanne Daner who crafted our Reuse illustration.
A few speakers from our 50+ participating cities include Ron Gonen (New York), Stephen Ken (Los Angeles), and Julio Rodriguez (Bogotá).
To find the March event closest to you, keep your eye on CreativeMornings.com, or follow your local chapter on Twitter. As always, free tickets are available starting the Monday before the talk.
Have fun, and if you’re feeling the reuse vibe, bring your own coffee mug!
